FINNIGAN, JOSEPH TERRENCE (1875-1918)
FINNIGAN, JOSEPH TERRENCE, Catholic priest of the Basilian congregation and teacher at St Thomas College, 1913-15; b. Toronto, 19 Sep 1875, s/o Patrick Finnigan and Mary Gilson; ordained 1899; d. Toronto, 28 Sep 1918.
J. Terrence Finnigan was educated at the Loretto Convent and St Michael's College, Toronto. He entered the Basilian novitiate in 1893 and was trained as a priest at St Basil's Seminary. After his ordination in 1899 he taught at Assumption and St Michael's colleges in Ontario and at St Basil's College in Waco, Texas. He was reputed to have been an excellent Latin teacher, and he taught Latin and history during the two years he was on the St Thomas College staff.
After he left Chatham in 1915 Finnigan began a second term of teaching at Assumption College. In 1918 he was appointed assistant master of novices in Toronto. He died a few months later, at forty-three years of age. He was remembered as "a genial priest who possessed the knack of winning the goodwill of all who had dealings with him."
