ARCHIBALD, BURKE (1821-1900)

ARCHIBALD, BURKE, teacher and lumberman; b. Upper Musquodoboit, N.S., 15 Apr 1821, s/o Samuel Burke Archibald and Margaret Wallace Dechman; m. 1848, Jacobina C. Porter, d/o John Porter and h/w Mrs Elizabeth McLennan, of Ludlow parish; d. Doaktown, 20 Dec 1900.

Burke Archibald came to Blissfield parish in 1844 as a teacher. He stayed to make his permanent home at Doaktown, but finding teaching "too tame a business," left the field in the 1850s and became a lumberman. He also erected a mill that ground potatoes into a substitute for flour, built a scow with which he freighted goods up and down the river, and opened his home as a 'halfway house' to the travelling public.

Archibald was a labor act commissioner for Blissfield parish and a supporter of the Baptist church. He was survived in 1900 by his wife, Jacobina C. Porter, and five of their nine children. One of the children who predeceased him was his eldest daughter, Jane Archibald, who was a schoolteacher and the second wife of John Haviland.
