The boarders in the Brunswick Hotel, King Square, St. John, were startled from their slumbers about 2 o'clock this morn. with the cries of murder ringing through the house. In a brief space of time lamps were lighted and people rushed in the direction of the cries that were heard. Mr. PARLEE, proprietor of the hotel, was the first to appear on the scene, Sleeping near by, he made up his mind before leaving his room that the cries came from the apartment occupied by Winfred ERB and Charles ROACH. Before he reached the door he saw there was a light in the room, and hurrying in, his eyes met a horrible looking sight. Standing in about the centre of the room were the two men engaged in a tussle and the whole front of Roache's night shirt and the floor covered with blood. In his right hand was a razor and Erb was holding onto his hand to prevent the man from doing further destruction. Mr. Parlee assisted Erb in overpowering Roach and taking the razor from him. The man struggled desperately for freedom in order that he might end his life. One of the boarders summoned Dr. D.E. Berryman and he arrived promptly. Roach bled freely and some little time elapsed before the character of the wound he had inflicted could be ascertained. . Charles Roach was for a time a student with Dr. Davis, dentist, Union St. A short time ago he went to Boston for the purpose of entering a dental college, but only remained away about two weeks.
