Yesterday morn., Joseph J. WHALEN amd brother, Fred WHALEN of Fairville (St. John) started on a fishing cruise up the river in a bark canoe. They put their fail craft into the water near the bridge and started throught the falls, but theu had evidently mistaken the tide for it was about low water. Directly opposite Cushing's mill is a narrow channel through which the tide runs strongly at all times and at the time Messrs Whalen attempted to paddle their way through, it was running with great velocity. The men evidently realized this when it was too late; the current soon caught the canoe and upset it. Both men were good swimmers and after holding on to the canoe for some time, they struck out for a small island close by. Charles HAMM of Carleton was going up through the falls in a dory and on seeing the accident put forth every effort to rescue the men. He reached Fred Whalen just in time to save him, but Joe Whalen had disappered from view before Hamm got to him. The victim leaves a widow and child.
