On Saturday last our citizens were surprised by the announcement of the death of Geo. R. ATHERTON who for many years was a large mail contractor and the proprietor of one of the most extensive livery stables in Fredericton. For many years he was an active member of the Free Baptist Church, but of late through infirmity he was seldom seen in public, although until within a few weeks he was accustomed to make periodical visits to his son's drug store and the store of Eli PERKINS. Deceased leaves behind him three sons, Robert ATHERTON of the Internal Revenue Dept., William T. ATHERTON and Geo. L. ATHERTON, druggist; also one daughter, Mrs. W.G. GAUNCE. His funeral was held on Sunday despite the stormy weather. The service at the house and grave were conducted by Rev. Dr. McLeod.
