The first gray steaks of dawn had not appeared above the horizon on Sunday morn. last, when Capt. Bev. MITCHELL of schr. "Jessie Lent" cast his moorings at Grimmer's wharf and headed his little craft towards his Bocabec home. He had been waiting for a chance to leave port for two or three days; and it would appear from the statements of the two lads, Charles HENDERSON and James LINTON, who were with him, that he had some doubts in his mind to the prudence of leaving when he did. 'With these old sails, I fear I can't make it.' was the remark he made to one of the lads when hetook the wheel. But he was anxious to get home and he allowed this anxiety to get the better of his judgement. He little dreamed that it would be the last time that he would set footon 'time's earthly shore.' The was almost a gale blowing from the North West, when the schooner shot out of harbor and headed towards the Sand Reef light. When between the reef and Quinn's weir, about 4 o'clock, the club came out of the jib. Leaving the wheel to Linton, Capt. Mitchell went forward and standing on the rail, caught hold of the sail to place the club in position again. A sudden gust of wind came, the sail filled and losing his balance, Capt. Mitchell fell into the sea. Capt. Mitchell was a man of 50 years of age and lived at Bocabec. He was the father of 12 children, most of whom a grown up. He owned a large farm at Bocabec and made a good deal of money out of a sardine weir he fished. (see original)
