Cries of help were heard about one o'clock yesterday morn. by Joseph REED, Watchman on Rankin's wharf, Portland. He was in the office at the time and a few minutes before had heard footsteps passing the door. Hurrying to the edge of the wharf he saw a man struggling in the water and threw a rope to him. The man was too heavy for Reed to lift and telling him to hold on to the rope, the other end was fastened to a post and Reed hastened to procure a boat, Failing to get one he returned to where he had left the man, but could not see him and then notified the police. Soon after daylight a grappling party began searching for the body and found it a short distance from where it had gone down. It proved to be James ROGERS, about 30 years old, unmarried, who lived at the Straight Shore (St. John) and the remains were removed to his residence. A jury consisting of Mr. VANDYNE, Wm EWING, Robert McINTYRE, E. HILTON, G. LAMONT, M. McCANN and C. BELYEA was empanelled by Coroner Rigby.
