James LAW, old Colonel Law as he was called, who dispensed until the day of his death a most prodigal hospitality on the spot the old Knapp house now occupies, fought with conspicuous gallantry throughthe French and Indian wars. Jonathan EDDY, who was captain in Col. WINSLOW's regiment, fought on the borders of Canada, was subsequently captain in Col. FYRES' Regt. and was stationed at Fort Cumberland, left the service on 30th Sept. 1760, was the engineer who superintended the making of the Eddy road leading from Amherst to the old fort, was afterwards Sheriff of Cumberland and a member for the Town of Cumberland and organized the rebellion at the head of the Bay in 1775, in conjunction with John ALLAN; Capt. DANKS, Capt. GARDNER, Capt. ROE, Lt. AYER and Lt. RAYMOND; Major DIXON who was captured by the French and carried to Quebec, there imprisoned and liberated when WOLFE captured this fortress. Archibald HICHELWOOD was Lord Cornwallis' secretary and afterwards represented the County of Lunenburg, N.S. William NESBETT was Speaker of the first parliament of Nova Scotia and represented the County of Halifax; Brook WATSON was the lame legged Major of London. The present Sir James COCHRAN, now 80 years of age, resident in London, England and late Chief Justice of Gibraltar, is a grandson of Major ALLAN one of the grantees.
