Yesterday Coroner Ives was called in to hold an inquest on the body of Samuel HASKINS, age 26, native of Halifax, N.S. who came to his death by a stab in the abdomen, inflicted by another sailor, Richard HAYS, age 18, native of Halifax, in the forecastle of English brig "Mary" of Halifax. These two young men were constantly skylarking together. It appears that each of the parties had a knife; that one cut the other accidentally and in retaliation he struck his comrade with a piece of rope which so exasperated the prisoner, the he plunged the knife into the side of the deceased. The deceased has a wife residing in Halifax, also his parents. The prisoner was committed to the Tombs by the Coroner to await trial and two sailors, James DAVIS and Patrick KELLY were committed as witnesses. - 'New York Herald'
