Hopewell Hill (Albert Co.) Jan. 16 - Squire James ROGERS died today after a brief illness age 84 years. The deceased was the third s/o John ROGERS, one of the earliest settlers at Shepody, who, with his brother, Robert ROGERS and Capt. John DUDGEON came here from Londonderry, N.S. in the year 1801 taking up what was then part of the Prince grant. The father of John and Robert Rogers, gradfather of the deceased, had emigrated from Ireland in the second emigrant ship that left after the war between England and France and had afterwards removed to Colchester, N.S. where he founded the township of Londonderry. The mother of the deceased was a d/o John MAHON, who emigrated from Ireland with the elder Rogers. The deceased, when a young man, taught school at Moncton, then known as the Bend, for many years, and aftewards followed that occupation in his native village. He conducted a large ship building and mercantile business at the Hill for many years, being for a long time the only merchant in the village. He retired from active business some twenty years ago. He was a life-long Liberal and was on more than one occasion an unsuccessful candidiate for the legislature. In church matters the deceased, who was a member of the Methodist body, was an assiduous worker. The brothers and sisters of Mr. Rogers were David ROGERS, John ROGERS, William ROGERS, Mrs. Daniel LOOMER, Mrs. Geo. RUSSELL, Mrs. John WORTMAN (afterwards Mrs. STEEVES) and Mrs. Colonel CLARK, all of whom are now deceased, except the latter, who now resides at Truro. The deceased was twice married, his first wife being a Miss EATON of Colchester, N.S. who died in 1874. In 1878 Mr. Rogers married Deborah ROBINSON d/o late John ROBINSON of St. John who survives him. He had no family. Mrs. Rogers is at present dangerously ill.
