Miss Alice DENISTON, age about 14, granddaughter of J.B. HAMM, St. John city and Miss Edith RUSSELL, age 13, d/o John RUSSELL, formerly of Messrs. Thurgar & Russell, were boarding at the house of R. McDONALD, Welsford (Queens Co.) Yesterday forenoon about 11 o'clock they went up to bathe in the Nerepis River. The river is of considerable width at that place and abounds in deep pools as well as in shoals. The point at which the ladies were bathing is about a mile and a half below Welford station. It would seem that Miss Deniston gor beyond her depth in the stream and screamed for assistance, which was promptly given by her companion, Miss Russell. Instead of being able to save her companion, she shared the same fate. When her companions who had accompanied them a part of the way went to look for them they found the bodies lying in the stream in water only a few inches deep in which they had drifted after they were drowned. The children gave the alarm and Messrs. R. McDonald and Joseph FIELDERS went to the scene of the tragedy and removed the bodies to the residence of the former. The relatives of the deceased in the city were immediately communicated with and John RUSSELL and David RUSSELL, brothers of Miss Russell, at once drove to Welsford. (see original)
