Old timers have pleasant memories of the Royal Hotel on Prince William St., once known as 'Stubbs' under the proprietorship of the late Thomas F. RAYMOND. It was the home of the late Humphrey GILBERT, police magistrate for many years. The fire of 1877 came and Prince William Street was laid in ashes with its historic hostelry. Mr. Raymond at once took the house on King Square theretofore known as the Continental and now known as the Stanley, where he remained until 1881, but the premises were too limited for the patronage that flowed in to him and in 1881 he removed to King Street to his house, the Royal achieved its greatest popuarity. Among Mr. Raymond's employees at the time of his death in 1894 were his nephew, William E. RAYMOND and Henry A. DOHERTY who served him in confidential capacities for 16 and 27 years, respectively. They knew Mr. Raymond's methods of doing business and were well qualified to succeed him. They retianed the services of Mrs. ADAMS who had been connected with the house more than 13 years, of Miss McDONALD, pastry cook of the house since 1882 and other trusted employees.
