d. Saturday last, 12th inst., at his residence, Kings Co., General John COFFIN, age 87. Commenced his military career at the Battle of Bunker's Hill, soon rose to the situation of Captain in the Orange Rangers from which he exchanged into the New York Volunteers and with that Corps went to Georgia in 1776. At the Battle of Savannah, at that of Hobkirk's Hill, under Lord Rawden, at the section of Cross Creek, near Charleston. On the 8th September 1781 the battle of Eutaw was commenced by Bravet Major COFFIN who highly distinguished himself, and to such an extent to draw forth the admiration of American General GREEN in his despatch to Congress (see original). At Peace of 1783, Major COFFIN retired his family to this Province, Representative for Kings Co. at House of Assembly, Member of Council, Chief Magistrate. During the last American War he raised a Regt. which was disbanded again in 1815. Left wife, large family.
