Among the passengers into the city by the western express Thursday were Thomas BAIRD and Charles BAIRD, formerly of Salmon River (Queens Co.), but now of Eureka, Humboldt Co., California. In 1858, Thos. Baird went west. He returned in 1865 and was accompanied back to California in that year by Charles, his brother. Since that time neither of them has until now revisited the land of their birth. ... Among the other province men who live in that section. Messrs. Baird mentioned Charles RAYMOND and P.H. RYAN, formerly of St. John, Andrew LONG of Fredericton and John VANCE, mayor of Eureka and a leading mill owner who hails from Nova Scotia. Joseph BRODERICK of Five Islands, N.S. and Alexander KINGSTON of Canaan (Kings Co.) N.B. also live there. (see original)
