The corner stone of the new Main Street Baptist Church was laid yesterday afternoon. Rev. J.A. Gordon, pastor said he held in his hand a short historical sketch of the church. He stated that early in 1841 the Rev. Thomas HARDINGE, pastor of what was then the Second Baptist church of Saint John, using as a pulpit, Thomas CUNARD's stoop, preached the first Baptist sermon in Indiantown. On the Good Friday following, Rev. Hardinge and the late Rev. Samuel ROBINSON baptized 30 converts at Marble Cove. These, with representatives from the first and second churches of Saint John, formed a branch mission in Portland parish. Early in 1842, at a meeting of the first and second churches, a request was made for the organization of a separate church in Portland. The following council was chosen to consider the advisability of organizing the church: Rev. T.H. Hardinge, Rev. Samuel Robinson, Jeremiah DRAKE, John KNOWLIN, Chas. D. EVERETT and A. McL. SEELY.
