The schr. "Mello" came throught the Falls yesterday and anchored in the stream opposite Rodney's slip, Carleton (St. John) About 5 o'clock John BELL, the mate, went aloft to send up the topmast. The captain, Frederick BELL and Edward MILBURY, the steward, were all at work at the windlass. John Bell was on the cross-trees of the mainmast and had nearly got the topmast into position when he gave the word to give it an extra turn. As they did so, the strain on the block attached to the top of the mainmast broke the iron hook that held it in position. The unfortunate man fell a distance of over fifty feet onto the deck load close to the foot of the mainmast. The boat belonging to the schooner was immediately manned and the body placed in it. They rowed to the steps of the South Wharf and placed it on a plank. A number of willing helpers carried it to Parker's drug store on Market Square. Dr. Travers here made an examination and pronounced life extinct. At 7:30 last night Coroner Earle held an inquest. Frederick Bell, the first witness, deposed 'I am the brother of the deceased and reside in Carleton. The deceased was 34 years old and lived at Carleton. (see original)
