The Coroner on Thursday eve., held an inquest at the house of John KELLY, No. 336 Water St., St. John, on the body of Jane PRINGLE, age 10, native of England. The deceased with her father and mother and five other children were steerage passengers on board ship "Normandie" Capt. Spaulding, from Liverpool hither, finding their own provisions, having left the latter port on 21st October and arrived here on 23rd inst., after a tedious passage of nine weeks. After being some six weeks on the passage, the steerage passengers of whom there were 199 exhausted their stock of provisions and were compelled to apply to the Captain who furnished them with a very scanty supply, but as much as he could from the stores provided for the ship and as a consequence there was a great amount of suffering and want on board - for though there was plenty of water, there was scarcely enough food to sustain life. The deceased was not well from the period of her embarkation, suffered much more than the other children of the family on passage, and when she arrived hither was not able to walk and after reaching her boarding house was confined to her bed; and although a nourishing diet was given her in sufficient quantities, she did not survive and died Tuesday morning at 6 o'clock. Verdict: died by disease produced by starvation.
