The brigatine "Kate Upham", Rouse, master sailed from St. John on the 14th Jan. for Matanzas and has not been heard from since. She is now 55 days out while she should have gone down to Cuba in 20 or 25 days. The "K.U." is 299 tons register and was built at Dorchester in 1864. She is owned by A.L. PALMER, Esq. and is uninsured. Capt. Alfonso T. ROUSE of St. John is master and the crew is composed of: Wellington RING, 29, St. John, first mate; John CAIN, 48, second mate, St. John; John OLSEN, 29, St. John, seaman; John CAIN,jr., 19, St. John, seaman; Alfred EAGLES, 26, St. John, seaman; Laban HANES, 25, Dorchester, seaman; Thomas SMITH, 50, Charlottetown, P.E.I., seaman. The vessel had a cargo of lumber shipped by Messrs A. Cushing & Co. which was insured. 20 March 1879 GLOBE: Last night's Cuban mail brought intelligence that the vessel arrived at her destination on 10th March after a stormy voyage of 54 days. The agents of the vessel writing to the owner A.L. PALMER, Esq. says that two of the crew were frozen to death and a third man had his feet so badly frozen that they will have to be amputated. (see original) 24 March 1879 GLOBE: It seems that the crew as originally shipped did not go in the vessel - Hanes of Dorchester and Olsen of St. John, backing out at the last moment. Andrew GALLAGHER an elderly man and a foreigner, were shipped to fill the vacancies.
