On 14th June, four sailors of three masted ship "Athenais" of St. John, N.B. were arraigned before a full court at Malta composed of three judges and a jury on charge against one of the men, William James KERR, age 21, native of Nova Scotia, of the wilful murder of Henry Hiram CHAPMAN, mate of that vessel on March 24th last, on board the vessel at Naples; the other three, John BUCKLEY of London; George LUCAS of Poole; and James BENNETT of Waterford being charged with bodily harn to said CHAPMAN. The Court, after retiring some time, delivered the death sentence against KERR and 15 years hard labor against LUCAS, BENNETT, and BUCKLEY. (see original)
