A feeling of gloom was cast over the little village of Colebrook (St. John) by the sad death of Daniel MINNEHAN by drowning. The deceased, 18 years of age, was employed at the rolling mills of Colebrook, where he resided with his father, who also worked in the mills. On Saturday afternoon Daniel Minnehan, John MINNEHAN, John BOYLE, David PERRY and Fred CLARK left Colebrook to enjoy an afternoon skating on Drury's Cove. The Cove was reached in safety and as the night approached the boys started for home together. While on the way home, Daniel Minnehan's skate became loosened and he stopped to fix it. His companions waited for a while, but as the operation of fastening the skate was somewhat lengthy they went on to their homes without seeing him again - and Daniel Minnehan was never seen again alive. Early yesterday morn. a search party headed by G.B. EMERY and accompanied by Minnehan's companions started on search for the missing youth. The boys guided the party to the place where they had left Minnehan fixing his skate. His tracks were followed from that place and it appeared that he must have missed his way in the dark, for his tracks led away from his home. The trail led to a hole in the ice into which the deceased had skated in the darkness. The river was dragged in the vicinity of the hole and the body was soon found in 12 feet of water and removed to Colebrook. Coroner Berryman will hold an inquest today.
