Deacon John CLEVELAND, an aged citizen of Alma (Albert Co.) died Friday, April 1, after a lingering illness. He was with a few days of completing his 90th year, being born at Truro, N.S., April 13, 1802. He was the only s/o Rev. Nathan CLEVELAND, Baptist Minister. In 1825, the subject of this memoir, his father, mother abd two sisters removed from Nova Scotia to Harvey where he had married Miss Amy MARTIN, by whom he had fourteen children, four of whom are dead. The surviving ones are John and Nathan Cleveland of Vancouver, B.C., Alexander CLEVELAND and William CLEVELAND, Mrs. James CLEVELAND and Mrs. James SMITH living in the U.S, Mrs. NICHOLSON and Mrs. AKERLY in Hillsboro, Mrs. MARTIN in Elgin and D.C. CLEVELAND, collector of customs, Alam. There are 100 grandchildren and 175 great-grandchildren. In 1825, when Mr. C. settled in Alma, there were only a few families iving in the parish. He gave his attention largely to lumbering; also doing some farming. He bult both a church and school house, also seeing that both pastor and teacher received fair remunerations for their labor. A few years ago Mr. Cleveland married a Miss MOORE of Hopewell, for a second wife, who nursed him during his last illness of about two years. (see original)
