A young man named George WATSON whose widowed mother lives at North Richmond (Carleton Co.) and who up to the time of his death had been in the company of John KERRIGAN, blacksmith, Lower Corner, was drowned on Smith's flats, a short distance below town of Woodstock. The deceased and a companion were amusing themselves in a birch bark canoe, when from some cause the boat was upset. His companion succeeded in reaching the shore by swimming, just in time to see poor WATSON, who was grasping at the canoe with his hands, sink to rise no more. Coroner ALLEN held an inquest on the body Sunday afternoon. On Tuesday the remains of Mr. WATSON were followed to the grave by a large course of people including the Rifle Company, headed by the Woodstock Brass Band, the members of the Artillery Battery and members of Carleton Division S. of T. (Sons of Temperance) and Woodstock Lodge of British Templars, the two latter wearing a badge of mourning on the left arm.
