Hammond Vale (Kings Co.) Oct. 12 - Last Friday morn. word reached here of the death of James ALEXANDER. Mr. Alexander left here a short time ago to go north, where he was foreman in the employ of Prescott & Son, New Mills, Restigouche. On the morn. 8th inst. he with his crew left for the purpose of stream driving. Sending a number of his men about five miles below a certain driving dam, he and an man named William WARD proceeded upstream to boist the gates. This was the last seen of the men alive. It is supposed that when the flood from the first dam on the river struck the one where these men were at work it immediately gave away, dashing its two victims pell-mell among the tumbling logs and raging waters. No serious results were entertained until lunch when the men had not returned. A search was commenced. Mr. Alexander was found high and dry on the shore while his companion was on the opposite side of the river among a pile of debris. Word was immediately sent to Mr. Alexander's father, as a result of which, Thomas KELLY, brother-in-law of the deceased, left on Friday eve. for the scene of the accident. Mr. Kelly returned, bringing the remains with him on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday 2:30 p.m. the funeral took place from Charles ALEXANDER's residence. Rev. Hubly of Sussex conducted the services at the house and grave. Deceased was 34 years of age. The pall bearers were William SHERWOOD, B.F. MYLES, Arthur ASHE, Wesley McFARLANE, Joseph TITUS (Bloomfield) and Robert CONNORS (Upham). Mr. Ward was a native of Maine and was buried at New Mills Saturday afternoon.
