Rev. S.W. SPRAGUE, who became ill at the house of his son, Rev. Dr. Sprague, became suddenly worse yesterday morn. and did not rally. He died in the afternoon. Mr. Sprague was born in Exmouth, England in 1814. When a boy he came to Newfoundland to enter the office of his uncle, a merchant at Carbonnear. At the age of 24 he entered the ministry of the Methodist Church as a Wesleyan missionary in Nfld. He remained in that district 20 years, serving one term as its chairman. In 1858, Mr. Sprague removed to Nova Scotia, having been appointed to the pastorate of Grafton street church, Halifax. His subsequent appointments were Baddeck, P.E.I., Petite Riviere, N.S., Horton, N.S., Carleton, St. John and Hampton. Sixteen years ago he retired from active work and settled at Hampton where he has since resided. While in Nfld., Mr. Sprague married Miss CURRIE of Harbor Grace. They celebrated their golden wedding some six months ago and have died within a few months of each other. The surviving children of Mr. Spraguie are seven sons and three daughters. The sons are Howard SPRAGUE, D.D., pastor of the Centenary Church, St. John; J.D. SPRAGUE, who teaches in Liverpool, N.S.; Richard W. SPRAGUE of Holyoke, Mass.; William SPRAGUE, who resides at Vancouver, B.C.; Thomas F. SPRAGUE, a physician in Woodstock, N.B. and Samuel W. SPRAGUE of Medicine Hat. The daughters are Amelia SPRAGUE wife of Walter DREW, sheriff of Queens, N.S.; Eva SPRAGUE who married another Mr. DREW of Petite Riviere and Flora SPRAGUE wife of William CROWLEY, St. John's, Nfld. The remains will be taken to Hampton, Friday, where the funeral service will be held on Saturday. (see original)
