A lamentable drowning accident occurred at the Ledge (Charlotte Co.) Saturday last by which Osburn YOUNG of Milltown, lost his life. In company with George HESTON and Walker WATTERS, two lads of his own age, Young started out for a sail on the river. Their boat was a small one and she was burdened with a sail much too large. As customary with inexperienced boatmen the sheet was tied fast. Running before the wind, the sail unexpectedly jibed and carried the boat completely over. Heston managed to climb on the bottom of the boat, while Watters started to swim to the old wharf near, which he reached in an exhausted condition. It is supposed that when the boat upset Young was thrown into the water and covered by the sail which prevented him from getting to the surface. Heston and Watters were rescued by Capt. George WATT, who witnessed the accident from the shore. Parties of men in boats from the Ledge grappled for the body all day Saturday without success. On Sunday morn. it was recovered by Archibald McBRIDE of Dufferin very near the spot where the accident occurred. The drowned boy was about 17 years of age and a s/o Byron YOUNG, formerly of the Ledge. He lived with his mother and brothers at Milltown. The funeral took place Monday, the remains interred at Oak Bay.
