On Sunday 22nd inst., the congregation of the Portland Methodist Church will hold their first Divine service in the new building erected on the site of the edifice destroyed by the disastrous fir of October 20th, 1877. Methodism in Portland has had an eventful history; two churches built at different times were swept away by successive fires. In 1828 the commenced the erection of the New Wesleyan Chapel . Rev. R. WILLIAMS was their first pastor and trustees of the Chapel were: Alexander McLEOD, Samuel H. McKEE, George WHITTAKER, William NESBIT, Henry HENNIGAR, Robert CHESTNUT, Robert ROBERTSON, Gilbert T. RAY, John B. GAYNOR, George LOCKHART, James BUSTIN, John OWENS and Francis JORDAN. In August 1841, this building was burned. The following clergyman were stationed in the Portland circuit since 1841: Rev. Humphrey PICKARD, D.D., Rev. George MILLAR, Rev. Michael PICKLES, Rev. F. SMALLWOOD, Rev. Sampson BUSBY, Rev. William SMITH, Rev. SMITHSON, Rev. John SNOWBALL, Rev. James ENGLAND, Rev. John PRINCE, Rev. Ingraham SUTCLIFFE, Rev. J.R. NARRAWAY, Rev. Dr. RICHEY, Rev. E. BOTTERELL, Rev. Howard SPRAGUE, Rev.
