Mrs. McDONALD, accompanied by her son, Alexander McDONALD, age 19 and a young girl named McMULLIN left Cow Bay at 10 o'clock, in a horse and sleigh, to go to Sydney Mines, to visit her sick daughter. The boy, who was driving, took the newly formed ice on the harbor on the Creek side, intending to land at Point Edward. When opposite the International Pier and about 2000 feet from it, the ice gave way, and all except the girl were drawn into the water. The son, in his attempt to rescue his mother, whose shawl caught in the sleigh, by which she was held. Michael NEVILLE of Bridgeport, N.S., who had just arrived at the Pier in the cars saw the accident and Daniel WHITE and others hurried to the spot - the former just in time to rescue McDONALD from a watery grave and to recover the dead body of his mother from being carried away by the current under the ice. - Cape Breton News
