- Officially the President of Nicaragua, May 1, 1967 to May 1, 1972 and December 1, 1972 to July 17, 1979
- Earthquake December, 1972 - Debayle declared martial law. Accused of pocketing aid money
- The Sandinista Front escalated its guerrilla war against the Somozas during his tenure
- Had maintained power with support from the United States, who saw Nicaragua as a stronhold against Communism. Jimmy Carter withdrew his support for the regime after 1972
- Abandoned power in 1979, fled to Miami. Sandinistas took control
- Assassinated in Paraguay at the age of 54
