- First and only leader of the Reform Party of Canada
- Formed Reform Party in 1987 (party branded right wing)
- Elected to the House of Commons, 1993
- Leader of the Opposition, 1997
- Initiated movement to encourage cooperation with Progressive Conservative Party, resulting in the formation of the Canadian Alliance, which most PC members refused to join. (Canadian Alliance later merged with Progressive Conservative Party to form the Conservative Party of Canada)
- Succeeded as leader by Stockwell Day, 2000
