The relative strengths of the three major parties going into the Nova Scotia Provincial election are conveyed by having John Buchanan (Progressive Conservative), Sandy Cameron (Liberal), and Alexa McDonough (NDP) keeping their heads above water in different ways.

- Progressive Conservative
- Elected leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia, 1971
- Premier of Nova Scotia, 1978-1990. Campaigned as "Honest John".
- Tenure saw Nova Scotia enter into massive debt
- Played an important role in the patriation of the Constitution
- Strongly allied with Brian Mulroney during Meech Lake talks
- Appointed to the Canadian Senate by Brian Mulroney in 1990. Retired at age 75 in 2006
- Accused of corruption, investigated but not charged
Alexa McDonough
- Born August 11, 1944
- New Democrat (moderate)
- Leader of the provincial NDP in Nova Scotia, 1981 to 1994
- Stepped down as leader of the Nova Scotia NDP to take over federal NDP leadership, 1994
- Won 21 seats for the party in the next election, herself as MP for Halifax
- Retired as NDP leader, 2002
- Re-elected federal MP in 2006
