Located on Saint John Harbour: St. John County: named for the Right Honourable William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland and prime minister of England in 1783: established as Portland Parish in 1786, as the town of Portland in 1871 and as a city in 1883: in 1871 Portland had a population of 13,000: Portland was amalgamated with the city of Saint John in 1889: PO Portland 1881-1897: PO Saint John North 1898-1952.
